The other day, a delightful person reached out asking about ‘off the beaten’ path opportunities / non-touristy areas to explore when coming off a cruise ship in Juneau.
In some ways, the ‘touristy’ things to do, locations to visit and activities have been created to provide people a great experience in the port town. However, I could relate to this request as there’s a part of me that always craves something more in-depth and more ‘local’ than what the average tour is set up to provide.
Below is a list of items I pulled together for this person - he recommended that I share it on the blog. While I support local tourism, I also support our guests having the best time and best experience that they can while here in Juneau.
This article may be especially helpful if you're docking in Juneau, Alaska for just a day and you want to make the most of your time in this vibrant capital city.
Here’s your insider's guide tailored specifically for cruise passengers—whether you're exploring on foot from the port or have transportation and a few extra hours to venture beyond downtown.
Top Things to Do on Foot Near the Cruise Port
Juneau's downtown area is compact and walkable, with several top attractions within 15 minutes of the cruise docks.
1. Alaska State Museum
Just a 10-minute walk from the cruise port, this museum is a must-visit. It offers beautifully curated exhibits on Alaska’s Native cultures, natural history, and gold rush era. Locals love it too—it's not just for tourists! Bonus: the building itself is a work of modern architecture.

2. Goldbelt Tram (Mount Roberts Tramway)
If the skies are clear, the Goldbelt Tram is worth every minute. The ride up Mount Roberts offers breathtaking views of Juneau, Gastineau Channel, and the surrounding mountains. There's a restaurant at the top, a small nature center, and even a trail if you're feeling adventurous.
Pro Tip: You can hike down the mountain (allow 2–3 hours) for a more immersive Alaskan experience.

3. Alaska State Capitol Building
History and architecture buffs will appreciate a quick stop at the State Capitol, which is just steps away from the museum and downtown restaurants. Guided tours are sometimes available.
4. Downtown Juneau Library
If you're a book lover or just want a quiet view, check out the library located just a block uphill. They often feature Alaska-themed novels and local history. It's also a cozy place to relax with panoramic views of the harbor.

If you're driving, consider heading northwest along Glacier Highway—a local journey called “out the road.” It’s a scenic, peaceful drive and offers several quiet nature stops:
Lena Cove: Pull-off spot great for tidepooling, photography, or a peaceful picnic. At low tide, you may spot starfish, crabs, and colorful shells.
Shrine of St. Therese: A beautiful, tranquil spot with a historic wooden church, gardens, and coastal views. This is one of the most serene and spiritual places in Juneau. Website: Shrine of St. Therese
Boy Scout Beach: Popular for hiking, clamming at low tide, and birdwatching. There's a short trail and often very few visitors—perfect if you're looking to escape the cruise crowds.
